TREINGO
2026 Edition — Community Tree Identification Game

Welcome to Treingo 2026

Treingo is Shrubscriber's community tree identification game. Over the course of the year, explore your neighbourhood — and anywhere else you roam — looking for the woody plant features on your card.

Every find is a chance to learn something, share a discovery, and connect with other members who are looking at the same world through newly curious eyes.

How to Play

Getting your card

Your card draws 24 items randomly from a pool of 40. Every card is different. Your card is yours for the 2026 season — when the 2027 edition launches, the pool refreshes and the game resets. Print your card or save it as a PDF to keep track.

Claiming a square

  1. Find one of the items on your card
  2. Take a photo
  3. Post it to Shrubscriber
  4. Include #Treingo and the item's tag (shown on your card) in your post

That's it. Your post is your claim. No approval needed — just show us what you found.

What counts as a valid find

Anywhere counts — Edmonton, elsewhere in Canada, or anywhere in the world. The goal is observation and learning, not geography.

Photos don't need to be perfect. Sometimes a find sparks a conversation — is that actually an aril? What species is that? — and it turns out the square doesn't quite fit. That's part of the game. We all learn, the photo stays, and you keep looking.

Completing your card

Work through your 24 squares at your own pace across the year. When you've posted a photo for every square, post your final find with #TreingoComplete and tag @Dustin so we can celebrate with you.

The first, second, and third members to complete their cards receive a surprise prize. Every member who completes their card before the 2027 edition launches will be recognized in the community.

The spirit of the game

Treingo is not a race, though there's some fun in being first. Your posts build a visual library of plant features that makes every Taxonomy Tuesday richer. Play at whatever pace feels right. Share generously. Ask questions freely.
